NEW BUILDING FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

The new building of the SAC Middle School was inaugurated by Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu SJ, the Provincial of Karanataka Jesuit Province on 11 Jan 2005. Fr Herbert Noronha SJ, the former headmaster of the Middle School unveiled the plaque. Fr Francis Serrao was present. The new block has more class rooms , computer lab, library, indoor games facilities. The building is put up at the cost of Rs 60 lakhs. This new addition gives excellent facilities to our young boys and girls of our primary and Middle School.

Entrepreneurial Motivation Campagne

One day Entrepreneurial Motivation Campaign was organized for PGDBM students of St aloysius College on 11 Feb. in collaboration with the Ministry of Small Scale Industries. There 70 participants. Prof. Edmund Frank, Dean, PGDBM, was the organizer .

Higher Education and Career Prospects in Media: Talk by Prof. Poornanada:
“ Media students should not specialize in a particular medium like television, radio, etc., instead they should specialize in a particular subject like sports journalism, business journalism, ” said Prof Poornananda, a research scholar, environmental communication expert, and professor in Mass Communication at Mangalore University . He was delivering a talk on ‘ Higher Education and Career Prospects in Media ' organized by the Department of Journalism chaired by Fr Richard Rego SJ on 18 January at the College.

Best Marching Contigent of REPUBLIC DAY-2K5

Congratulation to our NCC Naval Wing cadets. St Aloysius College NCC Naval Wing has earned another feather in it's cap by winning the best marching contingent for the Republic Day parade 2005 held at Nehru Maidan. The parade was presided over by Mr Jabbar Khan Hannavali, State Minister. The winning contingent was led by cadet Capt. Shiva Kiran G. Nath, II B Com. under the guidance of Mr Kiran of the Electronic Dept.

Creativity and curiosity was at its peak as thousands of students thronged St Aloysius College campus where a mega exhibition was inaugurated on Friday 26 Nov. This exhibition with more than 1000 exhibits from Middle School, High School, Technical Institute, PU College, Degree College, Nehru Nagar Orphanage and the IT-Centre has been organized as a part of 125th Jubilee Celebrations of St Aloysius College.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr Veendra Heggade, Dharnadhikari, Dharmasthala. In his speech he exhorted the young generation to judiciously utilize the abundance of knowledge accessible in the present era of IT. He also stressed the need of Value Education.

PUC Sports 2K4

The Annual Sports Day of the PUC section was inaugurated by Mr Santhosh Kumar Kadri, Vice President, HRD, MRPL, Mangalore on 24th Nov. About 2200 students took part in the colourful march past organized. Fr Francis Serrao , Rector presided over the inaugural and Fr Swebert D'Silva, the Principal, welcomed the gathering.

Observatory at St Aloysius.
A new observatory is being erected on top of the new Xavier Block for Science & Research. The project done at the cost of Rs 10 lakhs will be ready within next two weeks. We are expecting Dr Kasturirangan, director of ISRO to inaugurate the observator y.

St Aloysius College Day sports was held on 3 Dec 2004. Fr Denis Rasquinha, former Headmaster of the High School was the Chief Guest an inaugurated the Sports Day. There will be Jubilee Day sports on 9 Dec when students from all the sections of Aloysian Institutions will participate.

IMPRINTS-2004, the Science fest

IMPRINTS-2004, the Science Festival by our B Sc students was inaugurated by Mr Mohan Alva, Chairman, Alva's Educational Foundation, Moodabidri on 30 Nov. Dr. Varanasi Krishnamoorthy, Director, Varnasi Foundation, was the Guest of Honour.

The festival has been organzized by the Science faculty under the gudinance of Prof. Sureshnath. 18 teams from all over the State are participating in the fest. Sai Pranav is the student convener of the fest.
Two days extravaganza includes nine events which are aimed at helping the students to enhance their innovation and technical skills. Over 300 students from 20 different colleges have participated. A Science Exhibition "MIRACLE" was also organized as a part of the festivities where students from various colleges displayed science models . Dr Krishnamurthy inaugurated the Exhibition.

ANVEEKSHA-05
National Level Technical paper presentation competition

ANVEEKSHA-05, the National level Technical Paper presentation Symposium conducted by ELXIR, the MCA students Association of St Aloysius College was inaugurated by Dr K Chandrashekaran, NITK,Surathkal. Fr Francis Serrao, the Rector presided over the function & Fr Eugene Lob SJ, the Principal, Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, the Director were on the dais.
During the two days of the symposium, students from engineering and MCA colleges from all over India presented papers in Network Technologies, Mobile Computing, Object oriented Technology and Bioinformatics. Experts from respective fields also gave keynote lectures. Dr K C. spoke on Distributed computing, Dr Alice Clara, Monsanto ,Ban galore spoke on Bioinformatics, Mr. Srikanth, Philips Innovation Campus, Bangalore spoke on eXtreme Programming.
The Valedicotry function was held on 25th at 5pm. Dr I Karunasagar, Fisheries College was the Chief Guest.

MCA Team wins Runners Up Trophy
The MCA team led by Naresh won the Runners Up Trophy in he INFOFEST-05 conducted byGoa University. The team won first place in The Architect, Critique and Connoisseur and the second place in Web Weavers. Naresh, Rahul, Lijo, Balasubramanya and Rashmi participated in the events.
SWAMI AGNIVESH VISITS St Al.

Swami Agnivesh was the Chief Guest at the Public Meeting organized by the Chair of Christian Studies, Mangalore University on 18 Feb. The function was held at the St Al High School premises. A large audience was present and it was spell bound during the speech given by Swami Agnivesh. Fr Francis Serrao SJ, Rector felicitated the guest. Hazi Mohiudeen also spoke. Fr John D'Souza was the man behind the evenign programme.
Swami Agnivesh had an appealing message to all those gathered, especially the youth. He spoke about the breaking of "chains" which bind us- social, economic, religious, political. He stressed the need of recognizing the equality of women and empowering them. He also mentioned about the silent death of millions of female children ( foetuses ) who are mercilessly aborted by parents. He invited all those gathered to think independently and break all the barriers created by man, and set themselves free.

IGNOU INDUCTION PROGRAMME

The Induction programme for the new courses of IGNOU took place on Sunday, 13 Feb. Mr Santhosh Kumar Kadri, vice presidnet, HR, MRPL was the Chief Guest. Prof. K J Shenoy welcomed the gathering, Fr Denzil Lobo, the Coordinator of St Aloysius Study centre invoked God's blessing and inducted the new students into the IGNOU & Aloysian family . Prof. Letitia proposed the vote of thanks. Over 80 students have registered for various courses.
JUBILEE MASS on 10 Jan 2005

The solemn Eucharistic Thanksgiving Celebration of the St Aloysius College Institutions at the College premises here on Monday witnessed participation from a large number of clergy as well as laity including the staff, students, parents and alumni. Bishop Aloysius D'Souza was the Chief Celebrant and emeritus Archbishop Dr Ignatius Pinto preached a stirring homily . Five bishops and over hundred priests concelebrated in the Jubilee mass. The mass was followed by a felicitation programme.

BENEFACTORS DINNER ON 11 JAN 2K5

A special Jubilee Dinner for the benefactors of the College Institutions was organized on11 jan 2005. Fr Prashanth Madtha welcomed the gathering. Fr Rector thanked all the Benefactors for their help and cooperation. He also placed before the audience the future plans for St Aloysius College. he mentioned that St aloysius College plans to have a PU college in Harihar as the post silver jubilee programme, the college will eventually grow into a full fledged University college enabling the youth of those areas to get very good education. Fr Vijay Kumar, the Provincial also spoke about the future vision of this Institution. In response Mr Blasius D'souza, Prof Hebbar felicitated the Management of the College for the excellent work done during the las 125 years and on behalf of al the alumni and friends pledged to help in the projects envisaged.
MDP Programme
AIBA organized the second MDP programme for executives on 19 Jan 2k5. There were twenty participants from Industry and banks. Rashmi Uchil, MBA faculty member was the coordinator . Mrs Smitha Fernandes, consultant, from Bangalore was one of the Resource persons along with Prof. Kini and Prof Paul Aranha. 
SPINOUT-2004, The Management FEST

SPINOUT-2K4, the State level Management Fest by our BBM students was conducted on 17 & 18th Dec. The fest was inaugurated by Dr Subramanya Yedapadithaiah, professor, MBA dept, Mangalore University. Fr Francis, the Rector , presided over the function. Ms Rovina D'Souza, the staff advisor of SACMA welcomed the gathering. Prof. Ramesh Kamath, the Dean of Management faculty also spoke.
JUBILEE SPORTS DAY

The Jubilee Sports Day Torch Run was flagged off at 8 a.m.on 9th Dec by Fr Rector by lighting the torch. Govardhan of MBA was the first person to carry the torch. More than 1000 students participated in the torch run, starting from the College Chapel , to the Middle School, Hampankatta, Jyothi and arrived at the venue of the sports day at 8.45 a.m. That was followed by MARCHPAST where over 3000 students from all the Aloysian Institutions participated. There was also an alumni contingent led by former Justice Michael Saldanha. All the students were wearing special T-shirts designed for the occasion.

MODERN TRENDS IN CHEMISTRY: Seminar
A two day state-level seminar on 'modern trends in Chemistry was organized by the Chemistry Dept of St aloysius College on 3-4 Dec. The seminar was inaugurate by Dr C V Yalamaggad of centre for Liquid Crystals research Centre, Bangalore Fr Francis Serrao, the Rector presided over the function and Prof. Sripathy Rao, HOD, Chem. Dept and Mr Ivan Pinto of the same dept were on the dais. Fr Eugene Lobo, the Principal welcomed the delegates. There were 120 delegates from all over the State.
BLOOD DONATION CAMP

The NSS unit of St Aloysius College organized Blood Donation camp on 30 Nov. Over 150 students donated the blood. The camp was organized in collaboration with RED CROSS and KMC, Mangalore
St Aloysius gets A grade in NAAC assessment.
The NAAC team visited St Aloysius College for the purpose of accreditation. After visiting all the departments, and after extensive discussions with the staff, students and the management, the college was awarded A grade. Dr Muthukuruppan , former VC, Dr Kurup, Mumbai, Dr Tharadevi, Coimbatore and Mr Manjunath were the team members. St Aloysius College is one of the few colleges to get A grade.

NEW LIBRARY PROJECT

To mark the 125th year of St Aloysius College, the Foundation stone of the new MODERN LIBRARY was unveiled by Mr George Fernandes, the former Defence Minister on 10 Jan 2004. Mr Ossie Viegas has presented a plan for the new library. You are welcome to give your feed back on the design. We hope to begin this work soon.

SACAA ANNUAL MEET 2005
SACAA Annual Dinner was held on 13 jan 2005 at 7 pm. Over 900 alumni and alumne and their spouses and children were gathered in front of the Centenary block of SAC. It was a grand nostalgic gathering. Fun and frolicking was preceeded by a short formal function. Mr N G Mohan, the President of SACAA welcomed the gathering, followed by brief speeches by Fr Rector, Principal and Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu, the Provincial superior of the Jesuits. The bonfire was followed by housie hosue with attractive prizes, singing...and dancing...everyone enjoyed the evening...and some were seen dancing even at 11 p.m. !!

RURAL EXPERIENCE FOR
MBA STUDENTS

57 students of the MBA programme at St Aloysius College (AIBA) along with two staff members left for Mundagod, near Hubli for a four days of rural experience. Students were briefed by Fr rector before leaving for Mundgod. Students lived in various villages in groups of 5-6 and interacted with the people of the village. They also studied the village life, social and cultural activities and the economic well being of different communities in the villages. On return from this rural experience, they spent a day sharing their experiences and submitted an assignment on the rural exposure.

College Musical Evening
The Music Association of the St Aloysius Degree College held its much awaited Musical evening on 13 January 2005.The College also witnessed “Traditional Day” on the same day. Draped in colorful attire the students proved that even in the 21st century, they are very much in tune with their tradition and culture. The three MCs were at their best with humorous ‘shayaris', jokes and other tidbits. The budding singers made sure that the audience danced to their tunes, literally. No wonder the audience applauded and encouraged the singers, be it a slow song or a fast number.
Musical Evening would have been lack-lustre performance if not for the mind-blowing orchestra. To enliven the spirit of the audience the dance sequences proved to be magical. Be it the song from ‘Roja' or a fast number of Daler Mehendi or the rocking western music, the audience were on their toes.

Dr Kalidas Shetty, Science Advisor, US Dept of State visits St Aloysius
Dr Kalidas Shetty, Science Advisor, U.S. Dept of State, visited St Aloysius College on 17 Dec. He was accompanied by his two brothers who are Aloysians and his father, Dr N R Shetty. Dr Kalidas spoke to the M Sc-BIOTECHNOLOGY students on Food Technology and on his research in this field. Dr Shetty has won prestigious "Jefferson Science Fellow" award for his meritorious research in the field of food technology. He has published many papers and is presently professor at University of Massachusetts, Amherst,US. Mr Mangaldas Shetty, CEO of ELIND is his younger brother.
Dr Anant Agarwal enters the GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
Prof. Anant Agarwal, an alumnus of '78 PU and his team of scientists from MIT,Boston have designed the largest microphone with 1,020 microphones in a single array. It is known as LOUD (Large acOUstic Data Array Project) It allows operators to pinpoint, track and amplify individual voices in a crowd. This invention has gone into Guinness Book of World Records as the largest microphone array.

Flavian Pinto visits St Al
Mr Flavian Pinto, batch of 1971 B Com, visited St Aloysius on 18 Nov. He gave a very inspirational talk to the MBA and MCA students gathered in Eric Mathias Hall. Mr Pinto, who was Vice President of City Bank in Singapore, tendered his resignation to start new ventures in his life in Canada. He explained how the discipline he inculcated while studying at SAC has helped him to face challenges in life and to venture upon new adventures. Flavian is a donor. He has contributed over Rs 1.25 lakhs towards the new initiatives at SAC.

Dr Ramesh Rao, Canada, an alumnus is honoured for his work in DIABETES PREVENTION
Dr. Rao and his daughter Shanti were honoured by Rotary, Canada on 4th Oct for their work in preventing diabetes.They spoke about a worsening worldwide diabetes crisis that can be challenged through nutritional and lifestyle modifications. They described their findings from a pilot study in India that indicated that diabetes is "highly prevalent" in both rural and urban areas. They explained how the stressful and sedentary habits of our modern civilization are generating an environment favourable to a diabetes explosion. They described the mission of their program as an effort
To help the needy get proper nutrition, preventive education and treatment through mass empowerment.

ALUMNI DINNER

A special dinner meeting of alumni and friends was organized on 1st Oct at 7 p.m. About a hundred turned up for the meeting. Fr Eugene Lobo welcomed the gathering. Then there was a power point presentation on the recent development in the Institution. Fr Francis Serrao, the Rector of St Aloysius College highlighted some of the proposed plans and programmes of the Jubilee year. He requested the alumni gathered to extend their whole hearted support to the events ahead. Dr Shanthram Shetty expressed his sentiments, followed by Mr Joe Gonsalves and Mr N G Mohan, the president of SAACA. The program was organized by the Alumni Association.
